Halo 4 Didact Costume WIP Day 14

Here are the current photos and Video of the completed Helmet sculpture for my Halo 4 Didact costume. For the latest updates be sure to check out my Facebook page. Also follow me on Ustream to watch my (almost) daily live feeds showing be work on this costume.

Commissions Update

Commission orders/requests will resume on September 17, 2012 and will be open for a limited time. Messages/emails time stamped starting on that day will generally be replied to within 24 hours. (anything sent prior to that date will be ignored, or simply sent this form reply) Confirmed orders will then be handled on a first paid, first served basis until all are filled. Wait time for completion of orders will increase as the list grows, but generally takes about 1 to 4 weeks maximum turnaround time for most.

The best way to be sure that I get your message is to email directly to

Teaser clip of my new Mass Effect Blue Suns Armor for Dragon Con 2012

Brief clip from the first test fitting. 3 week speed build in EVA foam. Still some minor alterations to do and need to finish painting the weapons. I’ll post photos and info on how it was made soon.

Daedric Sword Prototypes

Once I manage to catch up on all my commission orders I will be starting on the actual Daedric armor. My apologies to any that I have not yet replied to, lots of emails lately. (I haven’t even been able to play Skyrim for over a week now!) I’ll try to answer everyone as time allows. For now here are a few new shots of the Prototype Daedric Swords.

Skyrim Daedric Sword Test Build

Ok, so for the last few weeks I’ve been playing Skyrim,… non stop. (level 73 as of this posting) Finally gotten to the point that I can tear myself away from the game long enough to actually start making something. Here is the first “Skyrim” project in the works, a Daedric Sword. Started on this today and got everything shown in the first video done in about 4 hours time. I should have the 2nd half of the build finished tomorrow and will be putting together the video for that soon after. Most of the tools, materials and techniques I’m showing are the same ones I used to make all the Mass Effect stuff.

Test version of the Skyrim Daedric sword made in EVA foam finished in just under 2 days. A bit of a rush job, admittedly. I cut a lot of corners and took a few liberty’s with the design, slapped some paint on it with a brush (no airbrush) and called it finished. After all it was just a trial build to figure out how I will be making the swords to go with my armor later this year. After making this I now have several ideas on how to improve the final prop, which should go much faster and look a lot nicer.

Let the gaming now resume! .. er,.. I mean the costume research!

Welcome to the Armory

1/1 scale, weight > 3 lbs. Each is hand constructed from durable, lightweight EVA foam. UPDATE: For a limited time these can be ordered via my website here:

Mass Effect N7 Armor & M8 Rifles Custom Orders

UPDATE: I’m currently taking requests to custom construct sets of N7 Armor and M8 Rifles. I will only be doing this for a limited amount of time. One, because its seriously cutting into my video gaming time, and two, I plan to start construction on my own Skyrim Daedric Armor soon.

For more information and photos check the N7 page on my main website.

Warhammer 40K Bolter

Just something I have been messing around with the last few days. Made entirely from EVA foam (just like my M8 Assault rifles) Rather than inserting a metal skeleton in this one I just hacked up and modded a Nerf gun for the core and handle.

Day 3 Progress: Still a lot of detailing/paint to add but the base of the gun is now finished. Scope is removable. The emblems will be sculpted/cast and attached last.

Back From DragonCon

Back home now and exhausted. As always Dragon Con was amazing! I had a great time talking to and meeting hundreds of new people and catching up with my old friends. One of the highlights was getting to meet and hang out with Mark Meer who does the Voice of Shepard in the Mass Effect Games. When I am more coherent I may post a more detailed rundown of the convention, but for now I need sleep and mass doses of vitamin C.

The Foam armor held up better than I could have ever hoped. We wore the armors for most of Saturday and Sunday, did a lot of walking, running, climbing stairs, posing for photos and partying in them. Admittedly, I was rather drunk for a good portion of this time and was not even trying to be careful in avoiding damage to the suit. By the end of the weekend it only needed to be touched up with a black sharpie in a few small places where paint had gotten scratched off. (mostly under the arms on the sides) I would have to say that it passed with flying colors.

If anyone has or finds photos or Video of the Shepard costumes please let me know. I was hoping to get a proper photo shoot done while at the con but unfortunately it didn’t happen. As regular attendees know it can be difficult to plan for much of anything as you never know what is going to happen next at Dragon Con.

Here is a few photos that Jane took of me in my completed N7 Armor. As I find more photos online I’ll try to link to them. You can also find more photos on my Facebook profile.

Off to Dragon Con!

With only a few hours left before I hit the road for Dragon Con I thought I would make one last posting. The N7 Armors are packed in their cases and ready to go. I did a final test fitting on the male last night, but since I was by myself I decided against taking cheesy photos of myself in the mirror, so pics of the Male Shepard will have to wait until I return.

The N7’s are not as complete as I wanted them to be, the whole tree incident took about 2 weeks off of the build so I couldn’t finish everything I had planned. Mostly small things like the Helmets/Visors and installing the magnetic panels on the back and on the M8’s (so they stick onto the back of the suits) I did manage to get some belt ammo pouches knocked out at the last minute today to hold things like money, ID, cell phone etc. (costumes without pockets are a real pain)

Looking forward to seeing old friends and making many new ones, but what I’m looking forward to most can be summed up by this video clip.

I’ll be taking my camera and flip video along so I should have lots of crazy photos and video to post in a few weeks. When I return I will do my best to catch up on all the emails and messages.

Fem Shepard Final Test Fitting

Final test fitting on the Female N7.

Less than 2 days before I head out for Dragon Con and much still to do. I don’t have the time to post very detailed updates right now so I’ll just be uploading some raw photos to the gallery here for everyone to check out.

Sorry for not replying to messages, emails and comments recently. As soon as I return (recover) from the con I’ll catch up with everything.

The Final Countdown

Not much time for progress updates currently, just too busy trying to finish things. Only a few days left before Dragon Con. I got most of the female painted last night in a marathon session. Sadly my airbrush compressor burned up at 4 in the morning,.. bound to happen when you run them for 6 hours strait. If I cant fix it then it’s back to “Bone Knives and Bearskins” (brushed paint jobs)

Hoping to get the female 100% tonight and then start to figure out and tape off the male for paint.

Mostly painted before the compressor died. Still have to add the gloss coat.

M8’s Almost Complete

M8 Rifles are almost complete now. Only going to do a little more detail paint work on these, then seal them and call ’em finished. I’ve spent all the time I can afford on the guns and need to move back to completing the costumes.

One step forward, 10 steps back!

Some of you may have read my girlfriends posts on the RPF stating that I recently found a very large tree laying in my master bedroom. Luckily I was in another room working on my M8’s when it happened. This is why I have not posted any updates or replied to any messages recently. I was finally able to get the electrical inspected and restored just a few days ago. (10 days later) But I’m happy to say that repairs to my home are almost complete now.

Needless to say after this happened I had basically written off Dragon Con and finishing the new costumes in time. However, thanks to the incredible support of my family, friends, neighbors and my wonderful girlfriend, I WILL be at Dragon Con and the costumes WILL be ready in time. With that said, here is my latest progress update.

Progress Day … er,.. What day is today?
Having no electricity makes prop making a real pain in the ass. Most of the progress done to these since the last update photo was accomplished using nothing but scissors, sandpaper and spray adhesive. (3M Super 77) It’s hard for me to estimate the time I put in on them since the last posing. Most of the time I was too exhausted to get much real progress done. Mostly I just fiddled with them to try and keep my sanity during everything.

Still some detailing and coloring to do on them but the body’s are pretty much finished. They are not as accurate as I would have liked, but with no electricity I had no access to my reference images. The only thing I had to work off of was the rough diagram I sketched to make the base patterns and my memory.

M8 Assault Rifles Day 1

Started a test to see if the EVA will work for making a few guns. Doing these as speed builds so probably not going to be exact or perfect. I should have these both finished in 2 or 3 days tops.

First I made a quick drawing of the M8 Assault Rifle and cut it out of the foam. I cut channels inside and inserted a skeleton to keep it rigid. Got the cores for both guns cut, assembled and rough sanded the edges. Also got the next layers for them rough cut. 2 layers thick for the core of the gun. It will be 6 layers thick in total using the 1/2 inch thickness foam. This means a lot of seams on the edges but I plan to skin just about everything with 1/8 thick foam sheeting. At this point I’m just building it up to then sand down into the proper shape.

N7 Armor Day 29

Day 29: Got the toe armor attached to the female boots and the boot tongue covers for both sets cut out. Also made a new set of N7 insignias, this time using construction paper on heavy card stock to prevent any colors bleeding like they did on the painted ones, again coating them with a heavy layer of clear resin to give them some depth.

N7 Armor Day 28

Day 28: Emblem test done. Had some bleeding with the type of paint I used under the resin so going to redo them tomorrow. Couldn’t resist starting to paint stuff. Put the first coat of paint for the stripes on the right arms, still have to put on another coating of base colors plus the luster and sealants.

N7 Update Day 27

First off a reminder that 2 of my auctions on Ebay are ending tonight, one for a Custom Guyver Helmet and one for a very nice Handblown Art Glass Vase, both of which I myself hand crafted. I need to sell these to help fund my trip to Dragon Con where I hope to debut my N7 Costumes so please check them out.

Day 27: I got the hand armor attached to the gloves and have started to work on the shoes and the N7 Logos that will go on the armor. I used E6000 to attach the pieces to the fronts of the boots (still have to do some detailing to the toes and attach the rest of the coverings) For the logos I have painted the logos onto some heavy card stock and will cut them out and surface coat them with a clear resin to give them a nice glossy 3-D finish effect. The hand armor parts are simply glued onto the gloves. The hands are the only part of the suit that the armor is actually attached to the under suit, since they are so small this is really the only way to attach them. All other parts of the armor are held in place using harnesses and strapping and worn just like real armor would be.

N7 Update

Doing minor tweaks and alterations to the various parts of the suits. One of the things I have learned from wearing costumes for long periods of time is they need to be comfortable and properly fitted to ensure they hold up well and don’t have any malfunctions while wearing them. So basically I’ve just been doing some minor alterations and adjustments to them. Once I get that out of the way the only things left are the lower legs and feet, then it’s coloring/painting time!

Here is a photo from a recent test fit of the female. No belt installed on it yet so she had to hold the legs in place for the photo.
